A brick building and a steam locomotive share this pairing of sheets, which captures Shimbashi in 1872, the year Japan's first railway opened between Shimbashi and Yokohama. The surrounding Ginza district was rebuilt in brick and stone after a major fire that year, part of a government push to modernize the capital. Rickshaws, carts and horse-drawn carriages crowd the street in the foreground, showing how new technology shared the roads with older ways of getting around. The print was made by the woodcut artist Koizumi Minokichi, and this surviving copy is missing its left section.
