Few scenes in this set are as crowded with traffic as this three-sheet triptych, titled *Tokyo Nihonbashi han ei no zu*, or *Flourishing Nihonbashi Section of Tokyo*. Nihonbashi, the bridge in Edo's merchant district, was the point from which distances along the great highways were measured, so the streets around it were always busy with carts, riders and pedestrians. The print dates to 1861, a few years before the Meiji Restoration reshaped the city, and its signature names Yoshitora, an artist known for lively scenes of urban life. The catalog subjects list carts, carriages and horseback riding, a useful guide to how people and goods moved through the city in its final decades under the shogunate.
