Few subjects in Yokohama prints were as novel as the Americans who settled in the port after it opened to foreign trade in 1859, and this triptych focuses on their dress and the bustle of town life around them. Dated 1861 and issued as part of a series on the Western world, the three sheets record a sight that fascinated Japanese viewers, when foreign clothing was still unfamiliar on Japanese streets. The record credits several artists from the Utagawa circle, and the signature reads Hiroshige. Notice how the designers render Western garments with close attention to cut and fabric, a reminder of the cultural exchange that reshaped port life.
