Few sheets in this gallery show London as directly as this triptych, which spreads a city scene across three panels: a pedestrian bridge, riders on horseback, and carriages passing people in Western dress. The design is signed Yoshitora and was cut by the engraver Koizumi Minokichi in 1866, a few years after Japan's ports opened to foreign trade. Prints from this series on the Western world gave Japanese viewers an early visual glimpse of distant cities, and the sheet's detailed record of clothing and vehicles is worth a close look.
