Few prints in this gallery show a Western port so plainly, and this one, titled "Igirisu rondon taiko" (roughly "Big Harbor in London"), depicts the Thames with ships crowded along its waterfront. It belongs to a series called "Images of the Western World" from 1868, the year Japan's Meiji government was consolidating power and opening its ports to foreign trade. The print is one section of a triptych, and the other two panels are missing, so its full scene survives only in part. It is attributed to Utagawa Hiroshige II or III, two artists working in the Utagawa school after the death of the original Hiroshige.
