A large elephant imported from India is the subject here, a sight few people in Japan had ever seen. Elephants were almost unknown there before the 1860s, so a living animal drew crowds and inspired a brief run of printed images like this color woodcut. The print is signed by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo, and the record credits Kanagaki Robun, who later became a well-known writer of popular fiction. Notice how the bold color and the animal's sheer scale make the print feel like a news item of its day.
