The title, "Big Imported Elephant," marks this print as a record of an animal few people in Japan had ever seen, a rare sight for the Edo-period crowds who came to Ryogoku, the entertainment district on the Sumida River. The print's inscription notes that it was to be exhibited there in Tokyo in March, which ties the image to the show itself. The artist, Yoshiiku, was a prominent ukiyo-e designer known for topical news prints, and the text is attributed to Kanagaki Robun, a writer of popular comic fiction. Together they show how woodblock prints turned foreign novelties into cheap, widely sold news.
