Set on the grounds of Shokonsha, the Tokyo shrine founded in 1869 to honor the war dead and later renamed Yasukuni, this woodcut triptych shows a French circus performing before the public. Spread across three sheets, the scene packs acrobats, aerialists, and trick riders into one lively space. Signed by Ando Hiroshige III and dated to 1871, it records the appeal of Western entertainment in early Meiji Tokyo, when novelties from abroad drew large crowds.
