A French woman strolls with her dog in this color woodcut, one of the foreign figures that Utagawa Sadahide, signing as Gountei Sadahide, drew for his series *Ikiutsushi ikoku jinbutsu* (Life Sketches of Foreigners). Japan opened its ports to Western trade in 1859, and artists like Sadahide turned to Yokohama's new foreign community for subjects. The print was cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi on hōsho paper, and its stroll with a pet shows how Japanese viewers were drawn to European habits of leisure.
