A seated man with a book in his lap peers through a pair of opera glasses, while a woman beside him holds a large glass and a Chinese man stands behind them, the three named in the title as American, French and Chinese. Prints like this, often called Yokohama-e, caught Japanese buyers' curiosity about foreign visitors after the port opened in 1859, and such figures were usually drawn for comic effect. The cataloguers found it hard to say which figure was meant to be the American, which adds to the joke.
