Rather than a harbor scene or a row of trading houses, this woodcut shows an American merchant strolling through Yokohama with a child and a dog, a domestic outing that would have looked striking to Japanese viewers in 1861. The port had opened to foreign trade only a few years earlier, in 1859, and its foreign residents became a popular subject for artists of the so-called Yokohama prints. The design is signed by Gountei Sadahide, a leading ukiyo-e artist of the period, and the block was cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi.
