An American beauty at the landing stage, or *hatoba*, is the focus of this Yokohama view, where the title and subjects point to a Western woman in fashionable dress and a sidesaddle ride. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade in 1859, and its waterfront drew Japanese printmakers eager to record the newcomers' clothing, horses and manners. The record credits the design to Toyohara Kunichika and others, while the signature reads Yoshitora, a reminder that these series were often produced by several workshops. The print offers a useful glimpse of how Japanese artists pictured the treaty port in its earliest years.
