A dwarfed cherry tree in full bloom draws the eye here, along with the American merchant who gazes at it in obvious delight, leaning on a long stick and wearing a green frock coat. A small vignette in the corner shows a woman in a bonnet of the period. The print was designed by Gountei Sadahide in 1861 and cut by the engraver Koizumi Minokichi. It belongs to the yokohama-e genre, which catered to Japanese curiosity about foreign residents after Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859. The pairing of a foreigner's fascination with a potted tree reflects that period's interest in cultural difference.
