Commander Matthew Perry, the American naval officer who pressed Japan to open its ports, appears here by name in the title, *Kita Amerika jinbutsu*, roughly "A North American Figure: Perry." The engraver, Matsushima Seikichi, cut this color woodcut on hōsho paper in 1854, the year Perry returned to Edo Bay and the Treaty of Kanagawa was signed. Japanese printmakers produced sheets like this one to satisfy public curiosity about the newcomers and their black-hulled steamships. Such prints blend portraiture with reportage, which makes them useful evidence of how Japanese viewers pictured the Americans during a period of national upheaval.
