This woodcut, titled as an accurate likeness of the commanding officer of the North American republic, dates to 1854, the year Commodore Matthew Perry's squadron returned to Edo Bay, though the record does not name the sitter. The engraver credited here, Koizumi Minokichi, was about 21 at the time. The print is on hōsho, a soft handmade Japanese paper, and its insistence on accuracy shows how seriously printmakers treated the new foreign figures arriving during the opening of Japan.
