The title promises a tiger, a "true picture" of an animal most viewers would have known only secondhand, yet the subject tags name leopards and roosters, a reminder of how loosely such prints were read. The record credits the writer Kanagaki Robun, while the signature names Kyōsai, the animal painter, as the artist who drew it on request. The sheet dates to 1860, just after Japan's ports opened to foreign trade, when exotic animals and foreign images were drawing public curiosity. The color woodcut on hōsho paper is worth a close look for its lively, humorous treatment of the animals.
