Titled *Seisha - Orandajin Nankin*, a phrase the record translates as "true picture" of Dutch and Chinese, this 1861 woodcut shows foreigners from two distant places gathered around food and drink. Such scenes drew Japanese curiosity after the ports opened to foreign trade in 1859. The design is signed by Issen Yoshikazu, a print artist known for depictions of foreigners, and the engraver credited is Koizumi Minokichi. Look at the color and the detailed rendering of foreign dress and table customs, which show how Japanese printmakers recorded these early encounters.
