This color woodcut shows a Chinese dragon dance, a subject that places it firmly in Nagasaki, the one port where Tokugawa rules allowed Chinese merchants to live and trade in a walled residential compound, the Tojin yashiki. Dragon dances were a visible part of the community's festivals, and printmakers in the city often recorded such scenes for local and visiting buyers. The print is credited to Koizumi Minokichi, a Nagasaki engraver whose working life spanned the late Edo and Meiji periods. Its hōsho paper and layered color show how Nagasaki's woodblock trade drew on its unusually open contact with China.
