Two Chinese men from Nanking stand in admiration of a Japanese Koshu fan, the detail that sets this sheet apart from other views in the series. It comes from *Ikiutsushi ikoku jinbutsu* (Life Sketches of Foreigners), a set of woodblock prints by the Yokohama artist Gountei Sadahide, who recorded the foreign residents and visitors in the port city in the early 1860s. The engraving was cut by Koizumi Minokichi, and the sheet's seal date corresponds to the Monkey year, which places it around 1860. Such scenes show how Japanese crafts drew the interest of foreign merchants and how the new treaty port brought people from many countries into daily contact.
