Foreign visitors are the focus of this 1860 triptych, which shows a lodging house where children dance for entertainment. The sheets are signed by Issen Yoshikazu, a pupil of Utagawa Kuniyoshi who became known for the fashionable "foreigner pictures" that flourished after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in 1859. Prints like this one recorded the novelty of Western visitors and residents for a curious public, and the seal dated to the Year of the Monkey places its making in 1860.
