Few prints in the Yokohama series show Europeans simply out for a stroll, and this one, titled "Dutch people taking a Sunday walk in Yokohama," turns that ordinary scene into a record of the port's foreign community. The sheet is a color woodcut dated to 1871, attributed to the designer Sadahide, who signed it under the name Gountei, with the carving credited to Matsushima Seikichi. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade in 1859, and by the early 1870s its Bluff and Settlement districts housed merchants and families from many countries, making such prints a popular way for Japanese buyers to glimpse foreign dress and manners.
