French men on horseback in Yokohama, out for a Sunday ride, make this sheet an unusual record of foreign leisure in Japan. Yokohama had opened to foreign trade only a few years earlier, in 1859, and its newly arrived residents were a novelty to local artists. The print is signed by Gountei Sadahide, a prominent ukiyo-e artist known for depicting the port's foreign community, and the engraving is attributed to Hori Sen. Its title is only partly legible because the left edge was trimmed, but the surviving text names the riders as French.
