Titled *Uma nori zukushi*, or "Melange of horse-riders," this woodcut gathers a range of riders in one composition, a common format in Meiji-era print series that catalogued types of people and pastimes. Horseback riding was a fashionable novelty in Japan during the 1870s and 1880s, as the country adopted Western customs, and the print's subject heading points to the mix of Japanese and Western clothing worn by riders of the period. The writer credited in the record, Kanagaki Robun (1829–1894), was a popular author known for satirical fiction about Tokyo's changing society. The artist's identity is uncertain, with the record suggesting Kobayashi Eijirō as a possibility.
