Ryūkō kuruma zukushi, which translates roughly as "Melange of fashionable vehicles," gathers many kinds of conveyance onto one sheet, from rickshaws and carts to paddle steamers and a railway train. The record dates it to 1850, but the railway is a useful clue. Japan's first passenger rail line opened in 1872, so the image more likely belongs to the early Meiji period, when new machines were changing city streets. The engraver, Koizumi Minokichi (1833–1906), worked in that period, and the sheet is worth studying as a record of how people pictured modern transport arriving alongside older forms of travel.
