*Kuruma zukushi*, or "all manner of wheeled vehicles," packs a catalog of conveyances onto one sheet, from carts and carriages to rickshaws and bicycles, which were then fairly new to Japan. The print dates from the early Meiji period, when the government was rapidly opening the country to Western technology, and the record lists horse railways among its subjects, a sign of how new forms of transport were entering popular imagery. The inscription *shinpan*, or new edition, and a seal dated Meiji 2 suggest a design that was reissued for buyers curious about these changes. The mechanism beneath one of the vehicles is worth a close look, since the record does not identify it.
