Ryūkō eigo zukushi, or "Fashionable Melange of English Words," is a color woodcut from 1887 that plays with the Meiji-era fashion for English vocabulary in everyday Japanese speech. Its author, Kanagaki Robun, was a gesaku writer best known for the comic novel *Aguranabe*, and he brought his satirical wit to the rapid borrowing of Western words. The print appeared during a period when foreign terms were spreading from the treaty port of Yokohama into the schools, newspapers, and shops of Tokyo. Today it is valuable both as a joke about language and as a record of how quickly Japanese culture was absorbing Western influence.
