*Ryuko eigo zukushi*, whose title translates roughly as "fashionable melange of English words," pokes fun at the flood of English vocabulary entering Japanese speech in the 1880s. Its maker, Kanagaki Robun (1829–1894), was a writer of comic popular fiction, and the print reads as both a joke and a snapshot of everyday language. The seal date of Meiji 20 places it in 1887, a few decades after Yokohama opened to foreign trade, when English borrowings were becoming a mark of up-to-date taste. Worth noticing is how the print turns that linguistic fashion into visual wordplay.
