Unlike the many foreign-themed woodblock prints of the period, this one focuses on a French man at his toilette, shown in the private details of his grooming rather than in a street scene or a harbor view. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, but the signature reads "Yoshikazu," so the attribution is worth checking. The print dates to 1861, a few years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade, when Yokohama and Nagasaki drew growing numbers of Western residents and visitors. Artists of the time often portrayed these newcomers with a mix of curiosity and caricature, and this sheet offers a glimpse of how ordinary Japanese viewers pictured foreign daily habits.
