Titled simply *Amerika*, this 1861 color woodcut shows American military men in their uniforms, a subject that drew great curiosity after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the late 1850s. The print is signed by the artist Utagawa Yoshitora, who was known for images of Westerners, and the engraving is credited to Koizumi Minokichi. Its printed sheet shows how Japanese printmakers turned the newcomers in the treaty ports into a popular subject for urban buyers.
