Captain Adams, commander of the steam frigate *Powhatan* in Commodore Perry's squadron, is shown here alone and up close, which sets this woodcut apart from the group scenes of the American visitors. Koizumi Minokichi cut the block in 1854, within a year of Perry's ships first reaching Edo Bay in 1853, when Japanese printmakers rushed to record the strangers. The title, which begins "People of the United States," places the sitter among those foreign visitors. A catalog note raises a fair question: the face is not flattering, so viewers may wonder whether the artist recorded a true likeness or was already caricaturing the foreigner.
