This two-sheet woodcut diptych shows Commodore Matthew Perry's American squadron off Uraga, on the coast of Soshu Province, where the fleet first anchored in July 1853. The record dates the print to 1850, three years before that arrival, so the date may reflect when the print was made or catalogued rather than the event itself. Engraved by Matsushima Seikichi, the pair also includes a map of the Soshu coast and the crests of feudal lords assigned to guard the bay, which show how the Edo government mobilized local domains in response to the foreign ships.
