Its title, *Ikoku kotoba*, means "Foreign words," and this sheet is labeled for America, though its inscriptions name a Russian woman and an English man. The print comes from the Yokohama woodcut tradition of about 1860, when the port had just opened to foreign trade and foreign dress and speech drew intense public curiosity. The text is credited to Kanagaki Robun, who later became known for popular comic fiction. The design is signed by Keisai Yoshiiku and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, and the clothing is worth studying closely, since such prints offered Japanese viewers an early, often playful look at foreigners.
