Two foreign figures, identified in the inscriptions as a French woman and a Dutch man, stand at the center of this color woodcut, whose title, "Foreign Words: Dutch," pairs the picture with a language lesson. The print bears the signature of Keisai Yoshiiku, a prolific ukiyo-e artist of the late Edo and Meiji periods, and its text is credited to the writer Kanagaki Robun (1829–1894). Sheets like this appeared after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in 1859, and they gave urban readers a playful look at unfamiliar visitors and their clothing, which is worth noticing in the detailed garments.
