This woodcut is titled simply "Amerika," and it shows American military men on horseback in Japan, a subject that set it apart from the scenes of landscapes and actors that filled most print shops of the day. The record ties it to the 1860s, when the 1858 treaties had opened ports such as Yokohama to foreign residents, and Japanese printmakers responded with a steady stream of images of these newcomers, known as *ijinga*. The attribution is to the Utagawa studio, with the signature of Issen Yoshikazu noted on the print. Such pictures mix close observation with caricature, so their clothing, mounts, and gestures offer a useful record of how Japanese viewers saw the foreigners in their midst.
