The title names three nationalities, Dutch, American, and English, and the print pairs them as the foreign visitors of its subject line. Kanagaki Robun, a writer of popular comic fiction who later became well known for his Meiji-era satire, supplied the text and design, and the carver Matsushima Seikichi cut the woodblocks. Around 1860, after Japan opened several ports to foreign trade, Yokohama and other treaty ports drew Western merchants, diplomats, and sailors, and Japanese print artists produced many pictures of them. Such prints mixed curiosity with humor, and they are valued today as records of how Japanese artists saw these newcomers.
