Trick riders, acrobats, and trained animals fill this color woodcut, which is titled *Daikyokuba*, or "big circus," a name that points to the horse-riding acts at its center. The inscription marks it as a *shinpan*, or new edition, and it belongs to a group of 1870s prints recording the spectacles that reached Japan as the Meiji period opened the country to Western entertainment. Such prints show performers and animals in a bright, crowded style that makes them useful records of popular amusements of the time. The lower right corner is torn. The sheet was given to the Library of Congress in 1930 by Mrs. E. Crane Chadbourne.
