Few subjects in Japanese prints of the early 1860s were as unusual as an elephant, and this sheet is titled *Hakurai Ozo no ben*, or "Big Imported Elephant." The animal was a foreign rarity in a country that had only recently reopened its ports, so such sheets were part of a wave of popular curiosity about Western goods and novelties. The text is credited to Kanagaki Robun (1829-1894), a writer of popular fiction, and the design is signed by Ichiryūsai Yoshitoyo. The woodcut is attributed to the carver Hori Kane. Its date of 1863 places it near the close of the Edo period, when printed sheets like this one circulated as cheap, topical news.
