Few Yokohama prints show a foreign merchant at work so plainly. Here an Englishman sorts fabrics for trade in a port that had only opened to foreign commerce in 1859. The design is signed by the artist Gountei Sadahide, and the woodblocks were cut by the engraver Koizumi Minokichi. Prints like this one circulated widely and recorded the newcomers and goods moving through the port's merchant houses in the early 1860s, making this sheet a useful glimpse of that trade.
