This three-sheet woodcut triptych shows the first steam train in Japan departing Yokohama in 1872, the year the railway linking the port with Shimbashi in Tokyo opened. The design is signed by the print designer Baidō Kunimasa III, and the carving and printing were handled by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi. Prints like this were popular in the early Meiji period, when newspapers and illustrated sheets recorded the arrival of Western technology. Its wide format lets the viewer take in the locomotive, its carriages, and the passengers gathered on the platform.
