A steam locomotive rolls along the waterfront in this triptych, a sight that would have been new to most viewers when it was printed in 1872. The Yokohama Kaigan line opened that year as Japan's first public railway, linking the port city with Shimbashi in Tokyo. The signature reads Hiroshige, but the record credits two artists of that name, the elder of whom died in 1869, so the attribution is best understood as the work of the Utagawa studio. The wide format lets the eye move from the engine to the harbor and the crowds gathered along the shore.
