Few subjects in Yokohama prints are as specific as this scene of Western merchants and their crews loading cargo at the waterfront, a view that became possible after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859. The work is signed Gountei Sadahide, the pseudonym of Utagawa Sadahide, one of the most prolific designers of the Yokohama print trade, and it was planned as a five-sheet panorama. Only two sections survive in this copy, so the full sweep of ships and longshoremen is only partly visible, though the remaining sheets still show how foreign shipping reshaped the harbor.
