Komojin no zu, or *Portrait of a Red-Haired Man*, shows a foreign visitor in a tall top hat and European dress. The term *komojin*, meaning red-haired person, was used broadly for Westerners. Engraved in 1845 by Matsushima Seikichi, the print belongs to the late Edo-period tradition of *ijinzu*, pictures of foreigners made for a public curious about Dutch traders at Nagasaki and other outsiders. Artists of this kind often mixed close observation with guesswork, so the clothing and features here are worth reading as a record of how Japanese viewers pictured Westerners. It is a woodcut printed in color.
