This three-sheet color woodcut shows a hot air balloon test at the Navy Department in Tsukiji, the Tokyo district that in the Meiji period housed foreign residents and new government institutions. The print's subjects, balloon ascents and foreign visitors, point to the 1870s, when Japan was eagerly adopting Western science and engineering, and crowds gathered to watch such demonstrations. Its creators are listed as Toyohara Kunichika, Utagawa Kuniaki, and Utagawa Toyokuni, members of the Utagawa school whose workshops produced many of the period's newsworthy scenes. Because the record's date is unclear, the exact year of this test is best read from the image itself.
