Here a foreigner is shown dancing in Yokohama, a port that opened to international trade in 1859 and quickly drew merchants, diplomats and sailors from abroad. The print belongs to the *yokohama-e* genre, colored woodcuts that Japanese artists made for a public curious about these newcomers. Designed by Yoshitora and cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, it pairs the visitor with women in elegant dress and musicians playing the shamisen. The scene is partly playful, but it also shows how Japanese artists observed and gently caricatured the foreigners living among them.
