Foreign children sledding across a snowy scene sets this print apart from the many views of Yokohama's newcomers that show trade and street life. Yokohama opened to foreign trade in 1859, and within a few years its foreign residents were a visible and novel presence that local artists recorded with keen interest. This sheet belongs to the *Yokohama kenbutsu zue* (Sights in Yokohama) series, and its seal date points to a monkey year, which the catalog record places at 1860. The woodblock was engraved by Koizumi Minokichi, and the print is worth a closer look for its depiction of Western sleds and winter dress.
