Ushigabuchi, a deep, curving stretch of the castle moat near the Kudanzaka slope, is the place this print shows, with the rise of the Kudan district set against the water. The 1870 date falls only two years after Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868, when the old shogunal city was becoming the seat of the new Meiji government. The series is linked to the Hiroshige name, a studio line that continued after the famous Edo landscape master's death, and it records a city in transition, with older moats, slopes, and streets still shaping the view.
