Shinobazu Pond, a lotus-covered lake at the foot of Ueno in Edo, is the setting here, and the inscription identifies the figures as Americans, which sets this view apart from the usual scenic prints of the series. Foreign residents had arrived only recently, after Japan opened its ports in 1859, and their clothing drew wide curiosity. Published in 1861 as part of the *Tōto meishō* (Famous Spots in Edo) series, the print was designed by Ikkosai Yoshimori and engraved by Matsushima Seikichi, with the text credited to the writer Kanagaki Robun. The foreign visitors' dress is the print's main point of interest.
