What sets this print apart is its subject: a Russian sailor or soldier shown lost in thought at Takanawa, a waterfront district on the edge of Edo. The title "Oroshiya" (Russia) reflects how Japanese viewers of the early 1860s followed foreign arrivals closely. After Russian diplomats and naval personnel began visiting and lodging in Edo, their presence became a source of both curiosity and unease. The print was designed by Ikkosai Yoshimori and carved by Hori Sen, and its series title, *Tōto meishō* (Sights in Edo), places it among the city views that ordinary buyers collected. Its carved and printed color shows how this genre turned a contemporary scene into a document of daily life.
