Titled *Amerikajin yugyo*, or "Americans Taking a Stroll," this color woodcut shows American residents out walking with their families, a leisure scene that would have looked unfamiliar to many Japanese viewers in the 1860s. The design is signed by Ippōsai Yoshifuji, and the block was engraved by Matsushima Seikichi. It belongs to the Yokohama-e tradition, which grew up after the port opened to foreign trade in 1859 and the foreign settlement drew merchants, diplomats and their households. Prints like this one record how Japanese artists observed the newcomers' clothing, manners and pastimes.
