Russian soldiers in European-style uniforms take center stage here, and the title, which promises Japanese translations of what it calls barbaric languages, points to a conversation theme. The sheet is signed by Yoshitora and was cut by the engraver Matsushima Seikichi, and it dates to 1863, a few years after Japan had opened ports to Western trade and foreigners had become a more common sight. Prints like this one reflected public curiosity about unfamiliar visitors, and this one offers a useful glimpse of how Japanese artists tried to picture encounters across a language barrier.
